I'd want to to this, and have the trap shoot out a stream of mist or some foggy kind of material, and then have lights INSIDE the Prop so it'd look like it's capping a ghost.
As for the proton pack... I'd be lazy and put a blue and red laser projector in the "barrel" so it'd look like the real thing.
